Adopt a Domestic Short Hair / Mixed

Domestic Short Hair / Mixed Cat

Bandha the Cat needs a home

Sweet Bandha is looking for his forever home! Though initially shy, Bandha warms out to be the most outgoing, playful and outgoing kitty!

Bandha and his brothers have initially tested positive for FIV. Newborn kittens may test positive for up to six months and most thereafter will gradually test negative. False positives occur when the cat carries the antibody (which is harmless) but does not carry the actual virus. The most frequent occurrence of this is when kittens are tested after ingesting the antibodies from mother's milk. It is VERY possible that these kittens will test negative months down the road and GPG will be cover the cost to retest the kittens at any of our veterinarians.

Humans cannot be infected by FIV. FIV is transmitted primarily through fresh infected blood entering the blood stream and semen. This means the only way that a cat can transfer FIV to another cat is through sex or deep bite wounds. Since these kittens are fixed and friendly, this will never be a concern. The chances that an FIV-infected cat will pass the virus to other cats within a household are slim to none.

FIV is not transmitted via the saliva, the teeth or the nails. FIV+ cats can share water bowls, pellet bowls, eat from the same bowl of wet food, and use the same litter box without the danger of transmitting the disease. They do not need to be kept separate from other cats, nor in isolation. A vigilant pet owner who treats secondary infections can allow an infected cat to live a long life.

Many shelters immediately euthanize cats with FIV because it is easier to do that than try to educate the public about FIV because it sounds scary because it sounds similar to HIV. Gateway Pet Guardians has consulted with multiple veterinarians and done a significant amount of research and we are 100% confident placing FIV+ cats for adoption.
